Writing Essays in English

Writing an essay in English is little different from writing an essay in any other language.  Basically, an essay is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your skills and knowledge on a particular subject.

The essay has to be interesting and to engage its reader, whilst informing them about a subject and showing your ability to look at this topic analytically and methodically.

Usually an essay will have a beginning, which is the introduction, then a middle section, the main body, then a conclusion. The introduction obviously introduces the topic and then sets it into context. The introduction is a means of showing where, in the bigger scheme of things, your subject fits in. The main body of the essay is the part in which you introduce your argument and where you will back up your argument with facts and statistics, quotes from other sources, and so on.

A conclusion is your chance to wrap everything up. A bit like wrapping up a parcel, the concluding section of an essay finishes the argument and draws all the various points together, without being repetitive.

Essays should always be well presented, preferably typed in word processing style.  They should also have good grammar, excellent spelling and perfect punctuation.  This is really important when it comes to essays, so if you aren’t too comfortable with issues of grammar, syntax and spelling, etc., then get a grammar checker package or application and make sure that you use it whenever you write an essay. If you don’t, you may find that your marks are not as high as they could be! You may be marked lower, due to poor spelling, grammar or punctuation.
