Rules of English that You Must Not Break
One thing that many students of the English language notice very quickly is that there are plenty of rules to be followed. In recent years the boundary on many of these rules has been stretched and even crossed completely. It’s important to note however that some of the rules of the English language should never be broken if one wishes to achieve high quality writing.
There really is no room for mistakes when it comes to spelling. To avoid correcting mistakes is to condone laziness in your written work. If your spell check comes across a word it doesn’t recognize, use an online dictionary or a good published one to confirm your spelling.
Proper sentence structure is absolutely necessary. The use of the internet can hamper proper English usage because of the many people that have turned writing into a shorthand/slang version that is now frequently used in this medium. Limit your use of regular and internet slang, or better still don’t use it at all. It’s a continuously growing problem that is working against our youth and ESL students that should otherwise be developing a precise and correct use of the language. It can be tempting to opt for slang, especially when using instant messengers or text messaging via cell phone, but it can spread quickly into other styles of writing if one is not careful.

The correct use of certain phrases is essential. “You and I” is an expression that often gets distorted into something else entirely. It can be all too tempting to neglect the proper use of certain words. “Me and you” is not an acceptable substitute so take care to pay attention.
Avoid the use of sentence fragments at all times. Many fiction authors will get away with the use of them but that is all. Do not make fragments a habit. Following the rules of English will ensure constant success.
